How to Advertise on ChatGPT in 2026: A First-Campaign Checklist

Prepare your first ChatGPT advertising campaign with an eligibility check, a practical brief, creative guidance and a measurement checklist.

Illustrative workflow connecting a customer question to a campaign brief and an ad concept.

You can start a ChatGPT advertising campaign through OpenAI's Ads Manager if your business and account are eligible. Prepare a clear offer, a relevant landing page, creative assets and a measurement plan before you spend. GPTAd is an independent product in development; it does not currently launch campaigns or connect to an advertising account.

Checked on September 24, 2026. This guide explains preparation and the current official setup path. Account access and available controls can change.

Start with eligibility, not an ad draft

OpenAI announced on September 23 that ChatGPT Ads would begin rolling out in Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam and Taiwan. Its announcement says self-service access is available for eligible businesses. A regional rollout is not a promise that every account has immediate access.

Start at the official OpenAI Ads site, then check the options and verification requirements shown for your own account. Consult the regional announcement rather than an old screenshot or an agency's unsourced eligibility list.

Advertising also does not buy a position in ChatGPT's independent answer. OpenAI says ads are labeled separately and do not influence those answers. Build your campaign around a relevant sponsored next step, not a promise that ChatGPT will recommend your business.

Write down the decision you want to help

A useful starting question is: what decision is the customer trying to make when our offer becomes relevant?

“Reach small businesses” gives a writer very little to work with. “Help a five-person design studio organize client feedback without introducing another complicated workflow” gives the campaign a problem, a constraint and a reason to care.

Use customer support questions, sales calls, product reviews you are entitled to use and your own website as inputs. Remove personal details. Group questions by the decision behind them: exploring a problem, comparing approaches or evaluating a specific offer.

Do not treat a list of imagined prompts as measured search demand. Label brainstorming as brainstorming. The aim is to create a testable message, not to claim access to private conversations.

Prepare five inputs before opening campaign setup

  • Offer: one product or service, its real benefit and who it is suitable for.
  • Evidence: the features, terms or product details that support that benefit.
  • Destination: a page that explains the same offer and gives the visitor one clear next action.
  • Creative: a headline, description and image that communicate the offer without exaggeration.
  • Measurement: the action you will count, where it is recorded and how you will recognize campaign traffic.

This preparation is valuable even if you discover that your account is not ready to advertise. You can reuse it in customer interviews, landing-page improvements and other channels.

A completed campaign brief

The following business and campaign are fictional. They illustrate how to prepare a brief, not a tested strategy or a prediction of results.

Example: Forma, a project workspace for small design studios

Customer decision: choosing a way to keep feedback and deadlines together as a studio takes on more clients.

Customer question: “How can our small design team stop losing client feedback across email threads?”

Offer: a shared place to review work, assign next steps and see upcoming deadlines. These features are assumptions for this fictional example; replace them with capabilities your actual product has.

Message angle: give the team one place to find the next piece of feedback that needs action.

Evidence needed: screenshots or a demonstration of the relevant workflow, plus an accurate description of what the product supports.

Landing-page promise: show how feedback moves from a client comment to an assigned task.

Desired action: a completed demo request, with a clear explanation of what happens next.

Learning question: do visitors who arrive for the feedback workflow understand the offer and request a demo?

That last question matters. A campaign is easier to interpret when it investigates a specific uncertainty. “See if ChatGPT ads work” is too broad to tell you what to change.

Set up the campaign in the official account

OpenAI organizes campaigns around an objective and budget, with ad groups and individual ads underneath. Its current campaign documentation describes Views, Clicks and Conversions objectives. Conversion optimization does not mean you pay only when a conversion occurs.

Choose the objective that matches the action you can actually measure. Review the budget type, dates, eligible locations and billing information in your account before activation. A daily budget is described as an average delivery target, not a fixed daily ceiling. Minimums and availability vary; check the live interface and official campaign setup guide for current terms.

Then give each ad group a coherent theme. For the fictional Forma brief, client-feedback organization is one theme. Reporting for a large enterprise is a different proposition and would need different evidence and messaging.

Use our context hints guide and examples to turn genuine product details into useful contextual inputs. Treat the examples as writing exercises, not delivery rules.

Make the ad and landing page agree

Read your draft ad aloud, then immediately read the first screen of its destination page. Does the page deliver on the reason someone clicked?

If the ad is about simpler client feedback but the page opens with a broad catalogue of unrelated features, the visitor has to reconstruct the connection. Bring the promised use case into the page's heading, example and next step.

Use an image that explains the offer. A product screenshot should show a real interface you have permission to use. A diagram should be visibly conceptual. A generic futuristic picture may fill the space, but it will not help a buyer understand what happens after the click.

Check the page on a phone. Confirm that text remains legible, the primary action works and there are no surprise steps between interest and completion.

Decide what a useful first result looks like

OpenAI's reporting includes delivery, traffic, spend and conversion metrics. Its documentation also describes static tracking parameters such as UTMs and conversion measurement. Reporting refresh times differ, so a recently launched campaign should not be judged from a single partial snapshot. See Ads in ChatGPT: The Basics.

Before launch, write a short measurement note:

  • Which landing page and campaign label will identify this traffic?
  • Which completed action matters, and have you tested that it records correctly?
  • Who checks delivery and spending?
  • What evidence would justify changing the message, destination or offer?
  • What spending limit and stop conditions have you approved for the experiment?

A click is useful diagnostic information. It is not proof of a qualified lead or a sale. Keep those events separate in the review.

The pre-launch checklist

  • Confirm account eligibility, verification and billing status.
  • Select one coherent offer and customer decision.
  • Verify every product claim in the ad and destination.
  • Check the image, links and page on mobile.
  • Review objective, budget, dates and delivery settings.
  • Test the measurement path with the person responsible for analytics.
  • Confirm the campaign and ads have completed the required review.
  • Record the starting configuration and the question you are trying to answer.

Do not copy a competitor's budget or assume that a reported result from another business predicts yours. Your first useful output is a clear learning record: what you offered, who it suited, what visitors did and what you will change.
