Keyword research is finding the exact phrases your customers search, so you write pages people actually look for.
You do not need paid tools to start. A free keyword tool, Google autocomplete and your own customer questions are enough to build a solid first list.
1. Start with seed topics
List the core topics your business covers, the broad themes a customer might search. These seeds are the starting point everything else grows from.
2. Expand with a tool
Feed each seed into a keyword tool to get hundreds of real phrases. Note the volume and difficulty next to each so you can compare them later.
3. Group by intent
Sort the terms into learn, compare and buy. Each group maps to a different page: a guide, a comparison, or a product page.
4. Pick your winners
Favour terms you can realistically rank for and that bring buyers. A low-volume "buy" term often beats a huge "what is" term.
5. Map one keyword per page
Assign a single primary keyword to each page. This stops your own pages competing for the same term.
One pitfall: Chasing only high-volume terms wastes months. Low-volume buyer keywords often convert far better.
Common mistakes
- Volume tunnel-vision. Big numbers look good but are usually the hardest to rank for.
- Ignoring intent. Ranking for a term no buyer searches brings traffic that never converts.
- No mapping. Letting several pages target one keyword splits your ranking power.
