Submitting your sitemap tells Google exactly which pages to crawl, speeding up how fast they get found.
You only need to do this once per site; Google re-reads the sitemap automatically after that. It is most valuable for new or large sites.
1. Find your sitemap URL
It is usually yoursite.com/sitemap.xml. Most platforms generate one automatically, so check there before building your own.
2. Check it is valid
Open the URL and confirm it lists your real, indexable pages. It should load without errors and exclude blocked pages.
3. Open Search Console
Go to the Sitemaps section under Indexing. You need a verified property first.
4. Submit the URL
Paste your sitemap path and click Submit. You only enter the part after your domain.
5. Confirm it is read
Check back for a "Success" status and the number of discovered URLs. A mismatch points to pages Google could not read.
Avoid this: Only include indexable pages. Listing blocked or redirected URLs creates errors in the report.
Common mistakes
- Submitting a stale file. A sitemap that never updates misses your new pages.
- Listing junk URLs. Redirected or blocked pages trigger "couldn't fetch" errors.
- Expecting instant indexing. Submission speeds discovery, but Google still chooses what to index.
