The technical SEO checklist

Work through this technical SEO checklist to make sure search engines can crawl, index and render your whole site.

Work through this checklist to make sure search engines can crawl, index and render your whole site.

Technical SEO is site-wide, not page-by-page, so run this quarterly and after any big change like a redesign or migration. None of it makes weak content rank, but a single technical fault can stop your best pages ranking at all.

Crawling and indexing

  • robots.txt allows your important pages
  • XML sitemap is present, valid and submitted
  • No accidental noindex tags on key pages
  • Canonicals point to the right URLs

Performance

  • Core Web Vitals pass on mobile
  • Pages load fast and images are compressed
  • The site is mobile-friendly

Structure

  • No broken links or long redirect chains
  • HTTPS is enforced site-wide
  • Structured data is valid and error-free

Start with this: Check indexing first. If your key pages are not indexed, nothing else matters yet.

Putting it to work

Treat the three groups in order: get indexed, then fast, then structurally clean. Most sites pass more checks than they expect. The value is in finding the one or two faults that are quietly holding everything back.

One step closer.
