A keyword gap is a valuable term your competitors rank for and you do not, an open door to traffic you are missing.
Finding gaps is faster than brainstorming from scratch. Your competitors already did the research; you just borrow the map.
1. Pick real competitors
Choose two or three sites that rank for your target terms. Use your search rivals, not just your business rivals.
2. Run a gap analysis
Compare their ranking keywords against yours with a gap tool. The terms they have and you lack are your shortlist.
3. Filter by intent and fit
Keep gaps that match what you sell and that buyers search. Drop terms irrelevant to your business.
4. Prioritise the winnable
Favour lower-difficulty, higher-intent gaps you can rank for soon. Quick wins build momentum.
5. Build the pages
Create or update one page per gap, mapped to a single keyword. Cover the topic better than the competitor who exposed it.
Heads up: Your own Search Console shows terms you rank on page two for, the easiest gaps to close.
Mistakes to avoid
- Wrong competitors. Comparing against giants surfaces terms you cannot win.
- Ignoring intent. A high-volume gap no buyer searches wastes effort.
- Listing, not acting. A gap only pays off once you publish the page.
