llms.txt explained

Understand llms.txt as an experimental proposal for curated site guidance, its adoption limits, and why it does not replace crawl controls or useful pages.

llms.txt is a proposed file that tells AI models which content on your site matters most, a roadmap built for LLMs.

It sits at yoursite.com/llms.txt, in plain markdown. It is new and not yet universally used, but it is low effort with possible upside.

What it does

  • Points to key pages. Highlights your most important content.
  • Gives clean context. Structured information in one place.
  • Complements robots.txt, which controls crawling, not priority.

Should you add one

  • Optional and emerging. Not a must-have yet.
  • Low effort. A simple markdown list of key URLs.
  • Guides only. It does not secure or guarantee anything.

Note: Adoption is still early. Treat llms.txt as a cheap experiment, not a core ranking lever.
